Program in Physical Therapy to Offer Foot Orthotic Fabrication

10/22/2024

Physical Therapy students in the sixth and final year of their program need faculty and staff volunteers, who are considered to be mild foot over or under-pronators, to participate in an individualized foot and ankle evaluation and subsequent fabrication of a pair of foot orthotics.

The students, as part of their course work, are required to examine the lower extremity region, determine an appropriate foot orthotic, and fabricate the pair of orthotics applying their clinical reasoning and psychomotor skills.

Volunteers cannot have diabetes, or any circulation or vascular issues in their legs or feet.

Participants need to be available for two separate dates, as outlined below.

  1. The foot and ankle examinations will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 29, Tuesday, Nov. 5 or Tuesday, Nov. 12, with two sessions offered on each day鈥攖he first from 2:10 p.m. to 3:40 p.m. and the second from 3:30 p.m. 5 p.m.  Volunteers will need to choose one of these times on one of these dates.
  2. Volunteers will also need to choose a follow-up date for the actual foot orthotic fabrication.  These sessions are being offered on either Tuesday, Nov. 19, Tuesday, Dec. 3, or Thursday, Dec. 5.  The follow-up sessions will occur at an appointed time between 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on each of these three dates.  All of these fabrication sessions could last up to two hours.

All sessions will take place at the School of Allied Health Professions. There is no charge for the foot orthotics, but each volunteer needs to be willing to wear shorts during the sessions and bring in a pair of walking or running shoes in which the orthotics can be used.

Those interested in assisting the students in the Program in Physical Therapy develop their assessment and orthotic fabrication skills, while receiving a free pair of individualized foot orthotics, should email Jada Hubert in the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training, at jada.hubert@health.slu.edu to secure their dates for both sessions.
