ROLE OF THE FACULTY

The Faculty has primary responsibility for such fundamental areas as curriculum, subject matter and methods of instruction, research, service, faculty status, and those aspects of student life which relate to the educational process. On these matters the power of review or final decision lodged in the Board of Trustees or delegated by it to the President of the University should be exercised adversely only in exceptional circumstances, and for reasons communicated in written form to the Faculty. In the context of shared governance, it is desirable that the Faculty have opportunity for further consideration and transmittal of its views to the President and/or the Board. Budgets, manpower limitations, the time element, and the policies of other groups, bodies and agencies having jurisdiction over the institution may set limits to acceptance and implementation of faculty advice. Responsibility for these matters within an individual school or college of the University, or the university libraries, rests with the Faculty of that school, college, or the university libraries. (Article II)

FUNCTION OF THE FACULTY SENATE

The Faculty Senate shall have responsibility for matters which extend beyond a single school, college, or the university libraries (Article II). The Faculty Senate shall:

1. act for the Faculty;
2. carry out any and all mandates given it by the Faculty;
3. call meetings of the Faculty;
4. establish and facilitate the operations of such committees as it deems necessary. (Article IV)
